Son's 21st at a Hotel .. do we use a cash bar, drinks package, bar tab or combination?
I'm not sure what to do. Some parties my son has been to have been fully paid for and some are at home where the guests BYO What is acceptable or normal these days?
If you're capable of paying for it, the polite thing to do would be to fully fund the drinks. But since his guests will all probably be pretty young, and most young people salivate and go crazy at the thought of free booze, it probably wouldn't be the brightest idea to just throw free liquor at young children, unless they're all intending to sleep at the hotel instead of driving home, or if you plan on driving lots of drunk kids home afterwards. If you plan on either driving or paying for their hotel, then by all means give them a free open bar.
For our wedding, we decided to offer free wine and beer, but did a cash bar for liquor and mixed drinks, since the fancy mixed drinks tend to run up the bar tab pretty quickly. It worked great for us and kept us within our budget and limited the amount of crazy drunks at our wedding.
Another thing that a friend did for her party, which I thought was a really great idea, was offer their favorite "specialty" cocktail (cosmopolitans) for free, as well as beer, wine, and a champagne toast.
There really is no "normal" thing to do in regards to drinks these days, it really just depends on your budget and how crazy you want the party to get.
